Habitat for Humanity Honors Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter in Ayer Rally

URGENT UPDATE: Habitat for Humanity North Central Massachusetts hosted a heartfelt rally in Ayer, MA, honoring the extraordinary legacy of President Jimmy Carter and First Lady Rosalynn Carter. This pivotal event marked the 39th Annual Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Work Project and was the first since President Carter’s passing, underlining the urgent need for community engagement in affordable housing.

During the weeklong initiative, thousands of volunteers across the nation united to advance Habitat’s mission of providing affordable homeownership. The rally culminated in a special lunch at the Habitat build site in Ayer, where students, local representatives, and volunteers gathered to celebrate the impact that the Carters have made over decades.

Habitat for Humanity NCM Executive Director Carolyn Read delivered moving remarks, stating, “Today, we come together to honor President Jimmy Carter and First Lady Rosalynn Carter, two remarkable individuals whose lives have embodied the very mission of Habitat for Humanity.” Read emphasized the Carters’ relentless dedication to service, noting their hands-on work with Habitat volunteers worldwide.

“The Carters didn’t just advocate for this mission; they lived it, year after year,” Read added, highlighting the emotional connection between homebuilding and community strength.

The event also commemorated the Carters’ influence on affordable housing with the recent renaming of East 6th Street in New York City to Jimmy Carter Way, honoring their efforts during the inaugural Carter Work Project in 1984.

Habitat for Humanity NCM provides a critical hand-up to low-income families in North Central Massachusetts seeking affordable housing. Through volunteer labor and donations, the organization builds and rehabilitates homes, ensuring that families have a safe foundation to thrive.

As part of their mission, Habitat NCM operates the Leominster ReStore, which raises funds through the sale of discounted materials and furniture. The ReStore is set to relocate to 650 North Main St. with a celebratory ribbon cutting planned for December 11. Until then, it remains open at its current location, 637 Lancaster St., through the end of November.

The rally in Ayer not only celebrated the Carters’ legacy but also served as a call to action for community members to participate in building homes and hope for families in need. As the holiday season approaches, the impact of this week’s work will resonate deeply, ensuring that more families will be home for the holidays.

For those interested in supporting Habitat for Humanity’s mission, opportunities to volunteer and donate are available, emphasizing the importance of community involvement in creating lasting change.
