Chester Unveils Statue of Kickboxing Legend Fredia Gibbs Today

UPDATE: Chester just unveiled a statue honoring Fredia “The Cheetah” Gibbs, a local hero and the first African American woman to win a world kickboxing title. The ceremony took place on November 6, 2023, across from Chester City Hall at East Fourth Street and Avenue of the States.

Mayor Stefan Roots praised Gibbs for her groundbreaking achievements, stating, “Her story has inspired the world, and she has been called ‘The Most Dangerous Woman in the World.’” With a professional martial arts career spanning three decades, Gibbs holds titles from ISKA, WKA, and WCK, making her a formidable figure in the sport.

“This statue stands as a symbol of hope and inspiration for everyone who walks past it,” said Roots. He emphasized that Gibbs’ legacy embodies the spirit of Chester, highlighting themes of grit, perseverance, and pride. “No goal is too big,” he added.

The statue was originally unveiled at Cabrini University in 2022, where Gibbs excelled as an All-American basketball player. Following the university’s closure, Villanova University transferred the statue to Chester, ensuring its rightful place in the hometown of this extraordinary athlete.

At the unveiling, Gibbs expressed her gratitude, saying, “Wow, what a moment. To stand here today, back here where it all began, means everything to me.” She emphasized the collective spirit of Chester that nurtured her dreams from childhood.

“This statue doesn’t just represent me; it represents us, it represents Chester, the heart, the fight, the resilience,” she said, holding back tears. “Chester is my story … . Thank you, Chester, I love you.”

The statue, crafted by artist Jennifer Frudakis-Petry and cast by Laran Bronze, is not just a tribute to Gibbs’ achievements but a beacon of hope for future generations. As Chester celebrates this milestone, the message is clear: greatness grows here.

As the community gathers around this new landmark, the city reaffirms its commitment to supporting local talent and celebrating its rich history. Residents and visitors alike are encouraged to visit the statue and reflect on the impact of Fredia Gibbs’ legacy.

This unveiling marks a significant moment in Chester’s history and showcases the city’s pride in its achievements. The statue serves as a reminder that determination and purpose can lead to extraordinary accomplishments.
