Bernie Kosar Remains Hopeful as He Awaits Life-Saving Liver Transplant

Former Cleveland Browns quarterback Bernie Kosar is holding onto hope as he awaits a life-saving liver transplant. After undergoing more than seven surgeries and spending a week in hospital care, Kosar remains optimistic despite the challenges he faces. His most recent scheduled transplant was canceled when the donor organ was found to be infected.

Kosar provided an update from his room at University Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio, sharing insights into his health journey. “I can’t wake up without thinking of some of the great words of some of my awesome coaches, like Coach Howard Schnellenberger and Coach Don Shula,” he stated. “They used to say how you do little things is how you do all things, and each day when you wake up you never stay the same. You get better or worse.”

Health Challenges and Ongoing Treatment

Kosar’s medical team has been focused on addressing internal bleeding, which has required multiple surgeries. He described the medical equipment surrounding him during his update, indicating the seriousness of his condition. “You can see all the IVs behind me. Left hand all really loaded up with a couple IVs and a midline. Getting ready to attack the day,” he said.

Although the internal bleeding has slowed, Kosar continues to need a liver transplant. Additionally, he has been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, adding another layer to his health battles. Despite these struggles, he remains committed to inspiring others through his resilience.

Support for Kosar has poured in from various quarters, including Ohio Governor Mike DeWine, who expressed his admiration for the former quarterback. “Well Bernie, we love you, and we just pray for you and hope you get better. You’ve given back so much to the Cleveland area and to Youngstown and really the whole world, and you’re someone who’s very, very special,” DeWine stated.

Inspiring Others Through Adversity

Kosar emphasized the importance of a positive mindset, stating, “I wake up early and I make the conscious decision each and every day to be better, especially to all the people, families, and communities who we’re able to touch in the course of our day.” He encouraged everyone to value their health and strive for improvement daily. “You matter! Let’s all have a winning day,” he added.

As he awaits the critical transplant, Kosar’s fighting spirit serves as a reminder of the resilience needed in times of difficulty. His journey continues to resonate with many, highlighting the importance of community support and personal determination in the face of health challenges.
