Major Roman Sculpture Exhibit Debuts in the U.S. from Torlonia Collection

The Torlonia Foundation has announced the debut of its renowned collection of ancient Roman sculptures in the United States. The exhibition, titled Myth and Marble: Ancient Roman Sculpture from the Torlonia Collection, marks a significant cultural event, showcasing some of the most exquisite works from this private collection for the first time. The exhibition will feature 58 highlights, including exceptional portrait busts, large-scale figures of gods and goddesses, magnificent sarcophagi, and intricate relief carvings.

The Torlonia Collection is often referred to as a “collection of collections,” encompassing over 600 works that represent three centuries of antiquities heritage. Once displayed at the Torlonia Museum in Rome, the collection was largely unseen by the public after the museum closed at the onset of World War II. It wasn’t until 2020 that these masterpieces began to be revealed again, thanks to the efforts of the Torlonia Foundation.

Exhibition Details and Significance

The North American presentation will include 24 newly restored works that have not been on view in nearly a century. Ranging in date from approximately the 5th century BC to the 2nd century AD, the majority of the pieces date from the High Imperial period of the 1st to 2nd centuries AD, a time noted for its artistic innovation. This exhibition offers a unique opportunity for American audiences to engage with one of the most significant collections of ancient Roman sculpture ever assembled.

The careful study and preservation of these works have been supported by Bvlgari through the Laboratori Torlonia. The Torlonia Foundation has articulated an impressive program, with additional support from Chiomenti. The exhibition is co-organized by the Art Institute of Chicago and the Torlonia Foundation, in collaboration with the Kimbell Art Museum, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, and The Museum Box.

Access and Impact on Cultural Heritage

The arrival of the Torlonia Collection in the United States not only enriches the cultural landscape but also highlights the importance of preserving and sharing ancient heritage. The exhibition stands as a testament to the enduring influence of Roman art and its relevance in today’s world. As visitors experience these intimate yet monumental sculptures, they will gain insight into the artistic achievements of an era that continues to resonate with contemporary audiences.

Overall, Myth and Marble promises to be an unforgettable showcase of ancient artistry, bringing together history, culture, and the beauty of Roman sculpture in a way that has not been seen in generations.
