The Midco Foundation has awarded a $10,000 grant to the Grand Forks Salvation Army, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing food and essential services to those in need within the community. This funding is particularly timely as the local Salvation Army reports a significant increase in demand for its services, serving between 450 and 500 people each month across Grand Forks County and East Grand Forks, Minnesota.
According to a press release issued on November 18, 2023, the organization has seen a remarkable 40% increase in the demand for food pantry assistance in recent weeks. This surge underscores the critical role of community support during challenging times. Ben Dold, President and Chief Operating Officer of Midco, expressed the foundation’s commitment to supporting local outreach efforts.
“Food banks across the Midwest are experiencing serious strain amid rising costs and an increased need for their critical services,” Dold stated. “Today, Midco is honored to support the outreach of the Grand Forks Salvation Army and share their story of hope with families across the community.”
Auxiliary Captain Eugene Ware, the corps officer for the Salvation Army, emphasized the organization’s gratitude for the grant. “This funding will help the Grand Forks Salvation Army continue to meet urgent needs in our community, such as emergency assistance for those facing food insecurity, and offer hope to our neighbors when they need it most,” Ware said.
Community Engagement and Support Opportunities
The support from Midco comes at a time when community involvement is essential. Rhonda Erickson, Senior Community Relations Manager and Foundation Executive Director, highlighted the importance of recognizing those who contribute to the Salvation Army’s mission. “Their daily acts of kindness and generosity keep many of our community members, including children and the elderly, fed and healthy,” Erickson remarked. “We’re so honored to help them with this grant and hope others will join us in recognizing them for their humble heroism.”
The press release also announced opportunities for the public to engage with the Grand Forks Salvation Army. A community meal will be held on November 21, 2023, and all are welcome to attend. Additionally, on December 12, Northdale Oil will host Big Ring Day, where donations will range from $0.10 to $0.50 per gallon of fuel, with a goal to raise $60,000. Each $20 raised can be matched to become $100 through corporate and community support.
The Salvation Army is continually seeking volunteers to assist with bell ringing, thrift store operations, and its core programs. Community members are encouraged to step forward and contribute to the ongoing efforts to support those in need.
