Chelmsford Hosts Urgent Forum for Parker Middle School Project

URGENT UPDATE: The next public forum for the Parker Middle School building project is set for Thursday, November 20, at the Chelmsford-Lowell Elks Lodge, starting promptly at 7 p.m. Community members are encouraged to attend this critical meeting to discuss the future of the school, as the project is currently in the important feasibility study phase.

Before the public forum, the School Building Committee will convene at 6 p.m. at the same location. This meeting follows an earlier forum held on October 22, where residents provided input on the project.

The Parker School project has garnered significant support, particularly through its partnership with the Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA). David Saindon, project executive with LeftField Project Management, emphasized the importance of this partnership, stating, “I always say that if a district gets invited in, that district has won the lottery.” He highlighted the competitive nature of MSBA acceptance, revealing that some districts have submitted interest statements for up to eight years without success.

Being in the MSBA pipeline allows for substantial funding assistance, with a base reimbursement rate of 52% of eligible costs associated with the building process. This financial support is crucial for ensuring quality education facilities in Chelmsford.

Project manager Tori Geier from Ai3 Architects noted that recent evaluations of the current Parker Middle School building revealed significant issues related to accessibility and code compliance. Most learning spaces are undersized per MSBA guidelines, underscoring the urgent need for a new facility.

At the previous forum, attendees participated in an interactive mapping exercise, identifying challenges and opportunities for the site. Community input highlighted desires for town support, enhanced accessibility, STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) programs, and sustainability initiatives. Participants expressed their vision for success, revealing a community eager to support educational improvements.

Additionally, in a related initiative, State Rep. Tara Hong will host a Pet Food Drive to support the Lowell Humane Society on Saturday, November 22, from 10 a.m. to noon at 951 Broadway St. The drive aims to assist the pet food pantry, addressing the often-overlooked issue of pet food insecurity during challenging times.

Rep. Hong stated, “This time of year can be tough for people when it comes to food insecurity…the Lowell Humane Society’s pet food pantry fills a need that can sometimes get overlooked.” She also encourages participation from fellow legislators to bolster support for the pantry.

Those unable to attend are encouraged to visit lowellhumanesociety.org/donate/wish-list for additional ways to contribute.
