“New Money” Explores Wealth’s Woes at Tallinn Film Festival

Estonian filmmaker Rain Rannu premiered his latest feature, “New Money,” at the **29th Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival** on November 14, 2023. This film, which follows Rannu’s earlier work “Free Money,” humorously addresses the question many dream of: what would one do with over €50 million, equivalent to approximately **$58 million**? The screening, part of the Baltic Competition, captivated a full audience, eliciting both laughter and contemplation.

The story revolves around characters Liisa and Taavi, played by returning actors Märt Pius and Steffi Pähn. The couple, who appear in “Free Money,” find their lives dramatically altered when they suddenly acquire a fortune in Bitcoin. As they navigate this unexpected wealth, they face a wave of anonymous insults, unsolicited offers, and a con artist’s schemes. The film’s synopsis aptly summarizes the chaos: “Confused and overwhelmed, Taavi soon regrets the morning he suddenly became a millionaire.”

Rannu discussed the creative process behind “New Money,” clarifying that it is not a direct sequel to “Free Money.” He expressed his fondness for the characters, stating, “I thought that maybe it would be great to spend some more time with them.” His informal approach led to an organic collaboration with the actors, who quickly agreed to participate in this new venture.

The film also features talents such as Ivo Uukkivi, Elina Masing, Edgar Vunš, and Keith Siilats. The production was managed by Rannu and Tõnu Hiielaid‘s company, Tallifornia. Sales for the film are being handled by Baltic Crime.

Rannu shared insights into the editing process, emphasizing its significance in shaping the final product. “In editing, you can make it or break it,” he remarked, highlighting the importance of focusing on subtle nuances. This attention to detail is reflected in the film’s exploration of its central theme: “more money, more problems.”

Looking ahead, Rannu hinted at the possibility of further expansions in the “Free Money” universe, mentioning, “A couple of good ideas are floating around already,” which could delve into broader stories of characters from “New Money.”

As audiences enjoy the comedic yet thought-provoking narrative of “New Money,” it serves as a reminder of the complexities that accompany newfound wealth. The film’s trailer, which promises a blend of humor and reality, can be viewed online.
