A group of students and teachers in British Columbia’s Central Coast experienced a harrowing encounter with a grizzly bear on March 14, 2024. The attack occurred in the remote Bella Coola Valley, part of the Nuxalk Nation. Multiple individuals sustained injuries, with reports indicating that two people are in critical condition while two others are seriously hurt.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) responded to the incident around 1:35 p.m. and confirmed that they were alerted to the bear attack in a location known as Old Trail. While the RCMP did not disclose further details about the victims, the British Columbia Conservation Officer Service has urged residents to avoid the forest and river areas surrounding the incident site until further notice.

In a Facebook post, Nuxalk Nation chief Samuel Schooner described the bear as “aggressive” and cautioned community members to remain indoors. He emphasized the importance of safety, advising people to avoid the area near the administration office and all nearby trails. His message reinforced the ongoing danger posed by the bear, which is still unaccounted for.
Acwsalcta School, an independent First Nation educational institution located in the Nuxalk Nation, confirmed in a social media update that the bear attack involved its community members. Consequently, the school announced it would be closed on March 15 in light of the incident. The post expressed gratitude for the support received during this challenging time: “It’s hard to know what to say during this very difficult time. We are so grateful for our team and our students.”
This incident marks a serious event in a region where wildlife interactions are not uncommon. Just last month, a grizzly bear attack in B.C.’s McGregor Mountain area injured two hikers, leading to one critically injured victim’s death due to complications. The bear involved in that incident was later found deceased, as reported by the B.C. Conservation Officer Service.
