Texas State University System Board Elects New Leadership Team

The Texas State University System (TSUS) Board of Regents has appointed new leadership, electing Stephen Lee of Bastrop as chairman and Don Flores of El Paso as vice chairman. This decision was made during the board’s quarterly meeting at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville on October 26, 2023. Both individuals received unanimous votes from the board members, marking a significant shift in leadership for the organization.

Stephen Lee has been a member of the TSUS Board of Regents since his appointment in 2021. He currently serves as the president and CEO of First National Bank of Bastrop, a role he has held since becoming the ninth CEO in the bank’s 135-year history. With over 30 years of experience in the banking sector, Lee brings a wealth of knowledge to his new position. His previous role includes 17 years as the president and CEO of First Financial Bank–Southeast Texas.

In addition to his professional accomplishments, Lee is a graduate of Lamar University and has been recognized as a distinguished alumnus for his contributions to both the university and the community. His leadership style emphasizes collaboration and strategic planning, which will be crucial in guiding the TSUS through current challenges in higher education.

Don Flores, the newly elected vice chairman, has a strong background in educational leadership and administration. He has been actively involved in various initiatives aimed at improving educational access and quality within the Texas State University System. His support of innovative programs and community engagement aligns with the board’s mission to enhance the educational landscape for students across Texas.
