UPDATE: The San Pedro boys basketball team pulled off a thrilling comeback in their season opener, defeating Palos Verdes 69-61 in overtime during the Wiseburn Da Vinci Tournament on December 4, 2023. Trailing by 12 points at one point, the Pirates showcased resilience and teamwork that turned the game around.
The Pirates entered the fourth quarter facing a daunting deficit. However, they surged back, outscoring the Sea Kings 20-10 to force overtime. “We had to come together offensively, knowing our strengths and we played harder on defense,” said San Pedro’s standout player Ricky Alonso, who scored an impressive 21 points, with 15 points coming in the critical fourth quarter and overtime.
In a nail-biting overtime, Palos Verdes took a brief lead at 58-57 following two free throws by Luke Dalis. But San Pedro quickly retaliated with a decisive 6-0 run, establishing a 63-58 advantage. Despite a late three-pointer from Palos Verdes’ Max Cui, who led all scorers with 28 points, Alonso sealed the victory by sinking six consecutive free throws.
“This game showed our character,” Alonso remarked. “Things started going our way, we started making shots and making a run.” Chris Morgan and Elias Redlew also contributed significantly, adding 15 points and 14 points respectively.
