UPDATE: The Neighborhood Nip Foundation is making a significant impact in South Los Angeles today, as they distribute 5,000 free Thanksgiving turkeys to community members. This urgent event marks the foundation’s first annual turkey drive, held at the historic Slauson Avenue parking lot—originally the site of the late Nipsey Hussle’s Marathon Clothing property.
Just hours ago, the foundation’s Samiel Asghedom, Hussle’s brother, emphasized the importance of the location. “This is where my brother first sold his mixtape,” Asghedom said. “We turned this whole lot into the Neighborhood Nip Foundation. It’s crucial to activate from here.” His words resonate deeply with the community, reflecting Hussle’s enduring legacy.
The turkey giveaway, which started at 2 PM today, is conducted in partnership with the Think Watts Foundation. Residents like Charles Wright and his grandson were thrilled to participate, stating, “We came to get turkeys and everything is wonderful.” The event serves not just as a meal distribution point but also as a significant community gathering, reinforcing bonds and support among families.
The Neighborhood Nip Foundation has transformed this site into a vibrant community hub aimed at serving local youth. Plans include academic programs and access to music studios for students from elementary through high school. Asghedom noted, “Any time we can come out and help is the plan. It’s an honor to be able to activate and do something here.”
The turkey drive comes nearly four years after Nipsey Hussle’s tragic death on March 31, 2019, outside his store in the Hyde Park neighborhood. The event not only honors his memory but also embodies the mission of the foundation to uplift the community.
As the sun sets on this day of giving, the foundation’s efforts highlight the power of community support and the importance of accessibility to resources, especially during the holiday season. This event is a testament to the enduring spirit of Nipsey Hussle and his commitment to South Los Angeles.
Stay tuned for more updates as the Neighborhood Nip Foundation continues to make strides in community development and support. This is just the beginning of what they have planned for the future.
