On March 15, 2024, ten aspiring firefighters were honored at a graduation ceremony for the Angelina College Fire Academy’s Class 2025-64. The event took place in Hudgins Hall, where students received their certifications and various accolades for their hard work and dedication during the rigorous training program.
Among the graduates, James Moore from Timpson stood out, earning both the valedictorian and Most Outstanding Cadet honors. The keynote speech was delivered by Debra Knight, the state fire marshal and a retired colonel who formerly served as a combat medic in the U.S. Army.
In his opening remarks, Jason Pope, coordinator of the Angelina College Fire Academy, expressed his pride in the cadets. “To say I’m proud of them is an understatement,” Pope stated. “It’s our mission to produce the best possible firefighters and continue to honor the traditions and professionalism associated with the fire service. With this group, I believe we’ve accomplished just that.”
Keynote Address Highlights Teamwork and Resilience
During her address, Knight acknowledged the significant achievement of completing the academy. “Congratulations, because completing this program is no small feat,” she remarked, emphasizing qualities such as grit, perseverance, and discipline as essential for success. “True strength doesn’t come knowing everything. It comes from humility, discipline, and teamwork.”
Knight shared a personal anecdote from her military experience, illustrating the importance of teamwork during unexpected challenges. She recounted how her unit was called back to duty on what was expected to be their return home. “What I remember most isn’t the disappointment…but how our team came together for each other,” Knight said. “Emergencies will come when you least expect them, and they don’t wait for convenience. Your training and discipline will carry you through.”
Graduates Embrace New Beginnings
Moore, reflecting on his journey through the 16-week academy, spoke about discovering a “new purpose.” He acknowledged the camaraderie built among his fellow cadets. “I don’t think I could have done this without my new brothers,” Moore stated. “In this time, we’ve made lifelong memories and friends, and I look forward to working with you.”
The graduating class also included the following cadets, along with their hometowns: Carson W. Basham from Pollok; Brandon M. Bostick from Huntington; Cameron B. Buettner from Nacogdoches; Jack T. Christensen from Nacogdoches; Damian Diaz from Lufkin; Kolton K. Karns from Douglass; Alex Padilla from Nacogdoches; Riley L. Vanscoder from Nacogdoches; and Chris A. Vasquez from Lufkin.
The success of Class 2025-64 was made possible through the guidance of a dedicated team of instructors and staff, including Chief Training Officer Jason Pope, Assistant Coordinator Shawn Dillon, and other professionals from local fire departments.
