Westlake Man Honors Late Father with 8,080 Holiday Lights

UPDATE: In a heartfelt tribute, Timothy Newsome is lighting up his yard in Westlake, Texas, with a staggering 8,080 light bulbs to honor his late father, Eddie JLP Newsome, who passed away on May 5, 2024. This year’s display is not just a festive decoration; it’s a legacy of love and holiday spirit that continues to brighten the community.

Newsome, who has taken on the beloved family tradition, recalls how his father’s passion for Christmas transformed their home into the brightest on the block. “My dad started this tradition many years before I was born,” Newsome shared. “He always had the best-lit yard and was praised for it yearly, with people even driving in from Texas to see it.”

This year’s elaborate setup, named “Newsome’s Old Fashioned Christmas Lights,” features not only the impressive number of lights but also 256 stake nails, 253 plastic figurines, and 70 strings of lights. “It takes about two weeks to fully set up,” Newsome explained, emphasizing the effort and love poured into each detail. “I try to reorganize the sets differently every year, just like Dad did.”

In a touching gesture, Newsome has kept an empty chair outside to symbolize his father’s presence during this festive season. “I know he’s still there with me,” he said, highlighting the emotional connection that this tradition fosters. “This was something special between me and my dad, and I want to continue it for the next generation.”

Additionally, the display includes unique features such as photo cutouts and wooden nutcrackers made by local Ag students, enhancing the community spirit surrounding the holiday. “My neighbors are awesome and work well with me on the lights,” Newsome added, expressing gratitude for their support and collaboration.

The legacy of Eddie JLP Newsome lives on not just through the lights but also through the joy they bring to passersby. “I hope everyone enjoys them as much as my father and I have all these years,” Timothy concluded, underscoring the importance of community and shared memories during the holiday season.

As Westlake prepares for the holidays, Newsome’s tribute serves as a beacon of light, reminding everyone of the warmth and magic that Christmas can bring, even in the face of loss.
