As 2023 draws to a close, the spotlight shifts to Louisiana’s remarkable individuals who have made significant contributions throughout the year. The Louisianan of the Year initiative invites public nominations, allowing residents to highlight those who have impacted their communities. The nomination period remains open until mid-December, encouraging diverse suggestions from the public.
Nominations are not limited to well-known figures; community members can also propose individuals who work behind the scenes. The criteria for eligibility are broad, emphasizing strong ties to Louisiana. This means both long-term residents and Louisiana natives active elsewhere are welcome to be nominated. The initiative also raises thought-provoking questions about individuals with Louisiana ancestry, such as notable figures who may not have lived in the state, thereby broadening the scope of potential nominees.
The selection process explicitly states that this honor will not be awarded posthumously. The focus remains on recognizing individuals who are currently alive and have made a noticeable impact within the year. While a positive influence is preferred, the criteria acknowledge that perceptions of impact can vary greatly among individuals.
In an effort to keep the process dynamic, previous winners, such as Governor Jeff Landry, are excluded from this year’s nominations. This allows for a fresh perspective on those currently shaping Louisiana’s landscape. Organizers are eager to receive unexpected nominations, whether they come from political, civic, artistic, educational, or religious backgrounds.
The call for nominations comes alongside a summary of public engagement. During the week of October 30 to November 6, the opinion pages received a total of 69 letters from readers. Notably, the aftermath of the LSU football team’s loss to Texas A&M generated considerable discussion, leading to ten letters focused on the topic. Additionally, concerns regarding a government shutdown sparked four letters, with another four letters addressing the potential impact on SNAP benefits during this uncertain period.
The initiative not only highlights local heroes but also fosters community engagement, prompting residents to reflect on the individuals who inspire them. The best nominations will be published alongside the final selections at the end of the year, creating a collective celebration of Louisiana’s vibrant community. As the nomination deadline approaches, the anticipation builds for the recognition of those who have made a difference in the lives of others.
