Bay City Boat Lines, a prominent operator of scenic cruises on the Saginaw River, has officially been sold as the company nears its 29th year in operation. Founded in 1998 by the Fournier family, the business is known for its narrated historical tours and onboard entertainment. The sale marks a significant transition for the company, which has served as a beloved fixture in the local community.
The acquisition was confirmed by Michigan entrepreneur Jordan Dice, who announced the purchase via a news release on social media. This move expands Dice’s diverse portfolio, which includes the Midland Mall, the State Theatre of Bay City, and the Court Street Theater in Saginaw. Dice expressed his personal connection to the company, recalling his childhood experience aboard the Princess Wenonah. “I remember being eight years old aboard the Princess Wenonah on its first tour and thinking how cool and iconic it was for Bay City,” he stated. He plans to continue operating the vessels and integrate them with his other entertainment ventures.
Bay City Boat Lines operates two vessels: the Princess Wenonah and the Islander. The Princess Wenonah, the flagship boat, has an extensive history, originally constructed in 1954 as a car ferry known as the William M. Miller. Over the past twenty years, both vessels have welcomed more than 250,000 passengers, providing a range of experiences including dining, music, and dancing. The dedicated staff has built a reputation for ensuring enjoyable cruises, a hallmark of the company’s offering.
While the sale has drawn attention, the news release did not address potential impacts on operations, staffing, or the upcoming 2026 cruise season. Representatives from both Bay City Boat Lines and Jordan Dice were unavailable for comment prior to publication.
The tradition of riverboats in Michigan is rich, serving as both community attractions and cultural landmarks. Notably, the AuSable River Queen in Oscoda Township operated for six decades before sinking in 2025. This vessel hosted countless weddings, school trips, and local passengers, emphasizing the vital role riverboats play in connecting communities and preserving local history.
As Bay City Boat Lines embarks on its new chapter under Jordan Dice’s leadership, the future of these iconic vessels remains a topic of interest for both locals and visitors alike. The continuing operation of the Princess Wenonah and Islander will likely keep the spirit of Bay City alive on the Saginaw River for years to come.
