Fresno’s Hookah Bal Revitalizes Nightlife with Rebranding Efforts

Fresno’s nightlife has received a boost with the reopening of the former Kan Zaman Lounge, now rebranded as Hookah Bal. Under new ownership, this late-night venue aims to attract both returning customers and newcomers to its location at the corner of Blackstone and Sierra avenues. The transformation marks a significant shift for one of the city’s longstanding hangouts, with hopes to rejuvenate its appeal in the local social scene.

The lounge is now open Monday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 1 a.m. and Friday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 2 a.m., extending its hours to accommodate a wider range of patrons. Owner Prince Raj, who recently moved from the Bay Area, envisions a modern atmosphere that encourages relaxation and social interaction. “We welcome regulars and first-time patrons alike,” Raj stated. “We’re transforming our lounge with relaxed music, a welcoming vibe, and later hours so people can unwind after dinner, an event, or a night out.”

Raj acquired the lounge from David Basha, the previous operator who continues to manage the adjacent Kan Zaman Grill. While the grill and lounge operated under a single brand in the past, they now function independently. Raj expressed gratitude for Basha’s support during the transition, noting, “He’s been helpful.”

With the sale finalized in early October 2023, the rebranding process has already begun. Raj is introducing new furniture and seasonal decorations to create a contemporary space that appeals to a younger demographic. He is also experimenting with innovative flavors and fruit bowl hookahs, enhancing the traditional hookah experience. “I would say I deliver more good service to the younger people because I’m younger myself,” he added.

Despite the Proposition 31 ban on flavored tobacco products that passed in November 2022, hookah establishments that restrict entry to those over 21 are still permitted to sell flavored options. This exemption provides an opportunity for Hookah Bal to thrive in the evolving market. Raj aims to integrate the lounge into Fresno’s growing late-night culture, providing a venue ideal for relaxation after a night out.

“Our goal is to make this lounge a part of Fresno’s cultural fabric,” Raj said. “Whether you’re into hookah, vaping, smoking, or just looking for a chill spot to connect with friends, we invite you to experience a comfortable, social place where you can share moments experiencing something new together.”

As Hookah Bal settles into its new identity, Raj’s commitment to creating a lively yet laid-back environment may well redefine late-night leisure in Fresno. With a focus on customer experience and a desire to cater to a diverse clientele, the lounge is poised to become a significant player in the local nightlife scene.
