Platte River Power Authority Upgrades Power Trail with Closure

The Platte River Power Authority (PRPA) has announced the closure of a section of the Power Trail in Fort Collins from March 2 to March 19. This closure will affect the area between Harmony and Prospect roads along Timberline Road. The purpose of the closure is to facilitate the installation of fiber optic cable for the transmission line, which is a crucial upgrade to enhance communication systems.

Starting on March 2, contractors from Sturgeon Electric Company, Inc. will be implementing the installation of new optical ground wire (OPGW). These cables will be positioned along the top shield wire of the transmission lines, significantly improving the critical communications infrastructure of the electric grid. Additionally, the OPGW will serve as a reliable grounding shield, providing enhanced lightning protection for the area.

During this project, flaggers will be present along the Power Trail, as well as traffic controllers at key intersections where the transmission lines cross Horsetooth and Drake roads. While the work is underway, traffic disruptions are expected to be minimal. PRPA has assured the public that signs directing users of the Power Trail to alternate routes will be posted by March 2.

Project Details and Updates

The project is dependent on weather conditions, which may affect the timeline. PRPA encourages residents and users of the Power Trail to stay informed about the progress of the project and any potential changes. Updates, including details about the detour route and any modifications to the closure schedule, can be found on the official PRPA website at prpa.org/transmission/fiber.

This initiative underscores PRPA’s commitment to modernizing the electric grid and enhancing safety measures, ultimately benefiting the wider community. The installation of OPGW is expected to provide long-term advantages for both infrastructure reliability and environmental safety in the Fort Collins area.
