San Francisco Centre Closes After Nearly 40 Years of Operation

The iconic San Francisco Centre has officially closed its doors for good after nearly 40 years of operation. The mall, once a bustling hub of activity, has become the latest casualty in a retail landscape increasingly challenged by changing consumer habits and economic pressures.

Emotions ran high outside the mall on the evening of October 20, 2023, as locals reflected on the memories attached to the space. San Francisco native Theresa Benitez expressed her sorrow, saying, “It’s just sad to see a part of the history of the city just ending a chapter.” She fondly recalled the friendships formed and the special occasions celebrated there during her college years.

Another resident, Sade Kellogg, shared similar sentiments. “We used to come out here and hang out with our friends. The full court had all the greatest food. It was just a great place to be,” she said, reminiscing about the vibrant atmosphere that once characterized the mall.

Longtime San Francisco resident Ron Coetzee noted the significant decline in the mall’s vitality over recent years. “It’s really sad honestly. This mall used to be so alive and prosperous, and it’s been in such a decline for a long time,” he stated.

Closure After Years of Declining Business

The decision to close the San Francisco Centre follows years of diminishing business and foot traffic. Earlier this year, the property was sold at a foreclosure auction, leading to the termination of existing tenant leases by the new owners. This marked a definitive end to a significant chapter in the shopping history of the city.

Local residents, including Gregory Murray, commented on the mall’s storied past. “This was a very iconic shopping mall for many years. Things have been changing,” he remarked, emphasizing the broader shifts taking place in the urban landscape.

In response to the closure, the city’s Mayor, Daniel Lurie, expressed optimism about potential future developments for the site. “I think what’s exciting in this moment is that we now have some clarity on what comes next, and that is that the market is going to dictate who comes in there,” he said.

Community Response and Future Plans

In light of the mall’s closure, a social media post has gained traction, calling for an impromptu celebration on Sunday, October 22, 2023. Antwan Shelbua, the organizer behind the event, encouraged attendees to gather respectfully and share music, stating, “Who’s to say that we can’t just kind of have fun and just have our last memory somewhere where a lot of people have met.”

As the community bids farewell to the San Francisco Centre, the focus now shifts to what the future holds for the site. While the closing marks the end of an era, it also opens the door for new possibilities in a city that continues to evolve.
