Community Mourns the Loss of JoAnn Slocum, Beloved Family Member

JoAnn Slocum passed away on January 4, 2026, after a brief illness, leaving a profound impact on her family and community. Born in Schenectady, New York, she was predeceased by her parents, Albert and Mary DePalma Popolizio. JoAnn is survived by her husband, David Slocum, of Niskayuna, their son Christopher Slocum, and three cherished grandchildren: Cameron, Jack, and Gabriella “GG” Slocum, all residing in Connecticut.

JoAnn and David’s love story began at Alpert’s Furniture Store, where they both worked. David served as the sales manager, while JoAnn held the position of credit manager. Their chance meeting blossomed into a beautiful marriage lasting over 50 years. Throughout her life, JoAnn was known for her passion for reading and her dedication to education, having spent many years at Craig Elementary School in the Niskayuna School District before enjoying her retirement.

JoAnn found joy in various activities, particularly spending time at the Schenectady Yacht Club and traveling in their RV. Family trips to Mystic and the Finger Lakes were among her favorite pastimes. She was thoughtful and always remembered significant occasions, ensuring that friends and family felt appreciated on their birthdays, anniversaries, and holidays.

In recent years, JoAnn faced significant life challenges but approached them with courage and resilience. Her strength inspired many who knew her, and she will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all whose lives she touched.

Memorial Service Details

A calling hour will be held on Thursday, January 15, 2026, from 15:30 to 17:00 at New Comer Cremations & Funerals, located at 343 New Karner Rd., Colonie, NY 12205. A memorial service will follow at 17:00. At the family’s request, a private burial will take place at the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery at a later date.
