The Grand Kyiv Ballet is set to perform a special adaptation of Tchaikovsky’s classic ballet “Swan Lake” on October 25, 2023, at the Shubert Theatre in New Haven and again on October 29, 2023, at the Warner Theatre in Torrington. In a departure from the traditional tragic ending, this rendition concludes on a hopeful note, with the swan surviving, a gesture intended to uplift audiences and provide a moment of joy amid the ongoing turmoil in Ukraine.

Artistic director Oleksandr Stoianov describes this unique ending as a “present for Ukrainians who live in the United States.” He emphasizes the importance of showcasing Ukraine not just as a nation experiencing conflict, but as a place rich in artistic expression and positive emotions. The Grand Kyiv Ballet’s approach highlights the resilience of Ukrainian culture and seeks to spread happiness through its performances.

Adapting Classics for Hope

The decision to alter the ending of “Swan Lake” is not unprecedented. Variations on the ballet’s conclusion have existed for many years, allowing characters to reunite in the afterlife or to rise again for another dance. This trend of reimagining tragic stories is evident in other art forms as well, including numerous adaptations of Shakespeare’s “Romeo & Juliet.”

In addition to “Swan Lake,” the Grand Kyiv Ballet has modified its production of “Giselle,” which was performed in Newtown on October 17, 2023. This version emphasizes the beauty of a sunrise as opposed to the spirits of the characters returning to their graves. Stoianov is keen on ensuring that alongside these classic ballets, the repertoire includes vibrant and uplifting performances such as “Bolero,” “Don Quixote,” and children’s tales like “Snow White and the Seven Dwarves” and “Sleeping Beauty.”

“We have to bring just good emotions. We must bring our art and our energy,” Stoianov stated, reflecting the determination of the dancers to infuse positivity into their work despite the challenges they face. Many members of the company are unable to return to Ukraine or reunite with their families due to the ongoing conflict.

Continuing the Legacy of Dance

Stoianov, who founded the Grand Kyiv Ballet 11 years ago, now resides in Seattle after retiring from performing due to an injury. His passion for the company remains strong, as he continues to create and direct productions. The ballet troupe consists of dancers primarily from Ukraine, and it manages three separate companies that perform across the U.S. and internationally.

The company has not performed in Ukraine since the war began, and Stoianov expressed a desire to return to their homeland when circumstances allow. Currently, the Grand Kyiv Ballet is focused on reaching audiences across the United States, particularly in areas that typically do not host international dance companies. “We try to show ballet in small cities. Everybody should see beautiful art,” he noted.

The upcoming performances of “Swan Lake” will take place at the Shubert Theatre on October 25 at 19:00 (local time), with tickets ranging from $59.50 to $129.70, and at the Warner Theatre on October 29 at 19:00, with prices between $60 and $83.

Through these performances, the Grand Kyiv Ballet aims to share a message of hope and resilience, demonstrating that even in the face of adversity, the power of art can bring people together and inspire joy.
