Jeremy Allen White Embraces Bruce Springsteen’s Legacy in Film

Jeremy Allen White has taken on the challenging role of portraying Bruce Springsteen in the upcoming film “Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere.” The film delves into the creation of the New Jersey superstar’s introspective 1982 album, Nebraska. White’s performance unfolds under the watchful eye of Springsteen, who was present on set during production.
During a joint press conference with co-star Jeremy Strong and director Scott Cooper, White, 34, shared his initial feelings of apprehension about embodying such an iconic figure. “I started in a place of real fear, to be honest,” he admitted. The actor expressed excitement about collaborating with Cooper and praised the script but acknowledged the immense pressure of portraying someone as revered as Springsteen.
Finding Bruce Beyond the Icon
To navigate this pressure, White focused on humanizing Springsteen. He aimed to connect with the artist during the early 1980s, a period when the musician returned home after touring, seeking tranquility but instead confronting his creative struggles. “Once I started approaching Bruce Springsteen as a man, I began to find my footing,” White explained. His preparation included learning to play the guitar and sing Springsteen’s songs, which helped him forge a deeper connection to the character.
Filming occurred at significant locations in New Jersey, including The Stone Pony and the Asbury Boardwalk, where Springsteen’s legacy is deeply felt. White described the experience as “sacred,” highlighting the emotional weight of capturing moments from Springsteen’s life. “There’s already a great deal of responsibility in telling any story, but telling his story and portraying moments that happened was very fragile for me,” he reflected.
Musical Challenges and Triumphs
One memorable scene features White’s rendition of “Born in the USA.” He noted the intensity of the performance, stating, “I did pre-record ‘Born in the USA’ but we re-recorded it at that same station where it was originally recorded.” He recalled the physical toll of delivering the powerful song, stating, “I lost my voice for about four days.” Despite this, White found satisfaction in the results, explaining, “By the end of it, I really liked the sound of my voice.”
“You can’t quite sing that song — you’ve got to shout it. It laid me out,” White added, capturing the essence of his dedication to the role.
Strong, 46, praised White’s commitment, emphasizing that while he pre-recorded the song, he sang it during every take. “To be fair, he did sing it. He was singing that for every single take,” Strong noted, underscoring the actor’s effort to bring authenticity to his performance.
“Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere” is set to premiere in theaters on October 24, 2023. With its exploration of Springsteen’s creative journey and the personal struggles he faced, the film promises to resonate with both fans of the music icon and newcomers alike.
As the film approaches its release, anticipation continues to build, highlighting the intricate relationship between an artist and his craft, as portrayed through White’s compelling performance.
