Joint Venture Acquires U.S. Rights to Oscar Hudson’s “Straight Circle”

Joint Venture has secured the U.S. distribution rights to Oscar Hudson‘s debut feature film, “Straight Circle,” after its successful premiere at the Venice Film Festival in September 2023. The film has garnered attention for its unique blend of absurdism and anti-war commentary, showcasing the performances of twins Elliott and Luke Tittensor, both known for their roles in the “Game of Thrones” spinoff, “House of the Dragon.”

Film’s Recognition and Themes

“Straight Circle” won both the grand prize and the award for most innovative feature during the Venice Critics’ Week. The narrative follows two soldiers of equal rank from opposing armies, stationed at a desolate desert outpost. As the story unfolds, the soldiers descend into madness, losing track of their allegiances and the very borders that separate them. Variety critic Siddhant Adlakha praised the film for its evolving premise, stating that it transcends its own political commentary through its abstract storytelling.

Hudson described the film as “a very silly story about very serious stuff,” addressing themes of national identity and the arbitrary lines drawn between nations. He noted that while the setting is intentionally vague, it offers both comedic elements and poignant reflections on the human condition, including the quirks of military life.

Joint Venture’s Vision and Future Release

Founded recently, Joint Venture aims to bring innovative and thought-provoking content to U.S. audiences. Co-founders Vinay Singh and Jess Jacobs highlighted Hudson’s ability to create a film that balances universal themes with specific narratives. They likened his work to that of acclaimed directors like Jonathan Glazer, Claire Denis, and Spike Jonze.

Hudson, who has previously directed music videos for renowned artists such as Radiohead, Bonobo, and James Blake, has established a reputation for his creative storytelling through various short films, earning accolades including a Primetime Emmy and a Cannes Lions Grand Prix. The release of “Straight Circle” in U.S. theaters is anticipated later this year, marking a significant milestone in his filmmaking career.

The acquisition was facilitated by a negotiation team that included Julia Nelson, Christine D’Souza, and CAA Media Finance on behalf of the filmmakers, while Chris Lane and Becca Leckie represented Joint Venture. With its combination of humor and serious themes, “Straight Circle” is poised to resonate with audiences and contribute to ongoing discussions about identity and conflict.
