Matt Damon and Ben Affleck Discuss Netflix’s New Filmmaking Approach

Damon pointed out that traditional filmmaking practices, such as structuring an action movie around three major set pieces, were not prioritized during the development of their Netflix project. “The standard way to make an action movie that we learned was, you usually have three set pieces. One in the first act, one in the second, one in the third,” he explained. “You spend most of your money on that one in the third act. That’s your finale.”

However, Netflix’s strategy shifts this norm. Damon noted that the platform encourages filmmakers to capture the audience’s attention right from the start. “Now they’re like, ‘Can we get a big one in the first five minutes? We want people to stay,’” he stated. He further remarked on the necessity of reiterating the plot multiple times in the dialogue, suggesting that many viewers may be distracted by their phones while watching.

The Success of Non-Traditional Narratives

In contrast, Affleck highlighted the success of the recent Netflix release, Adolescence, which deviated from these guidelines. He praised the film for its bold storytelling choices, which included fewer conventional elements and a darker, more intense narrative. “But then you look at Adolescence, and it didn’t do any of that,” Affleck argued. “And it’s great. It’s dark too. It’s tragic and intense.”

The film centers on a father grappling with the accusation that his child is involved in a murder, featuring long, contemplative shots that focus on characters’ reactions rather than dialogue.
