The popular anime film, Attack on Titan: The Last Attack, is making a comeback in theaters with a remastered version. This updated edition will be released in Japan on January 9, 2024, and will feature a “Dolby Cinema remaster,” enhancing the visual and auditory experience for viewers. Following its initial release, which ran for two and a half hours, this remaster aims to draw audiences back into the intense world of the Scout Regiment.
The film compiles the concluding episodes of the acclaimed series created by MAPPA. While it may not have achieved the same box office success as Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, it nevertheless delivered a powerful narrative. A standard version of the film will also be available in theaters starting on January 16, 2024.
As of now, there is no confirmation regarding a release of the remastered film in North America, but fans are hopeful for its eventual availability in Western markets. Along with the announcement, Attack on Titan shared a side-by-side comparison showcasing the differences between the original and the remastered versions of the film.
Director’s Insights on the Remaster
Director Yuichiro Hayashi expressed his excitement about the film’s return, stating, “THE LAST ATTACK is back for a screening!! This is all thanks to all the fans who came to the theater multiple times to support us when the film was released last time. Thank you! And this time it’s not just a re-screening; the visuals and sound have been re-adjusted to bring out the film’s full potential.” He added that the remaster enhances the immersive experience, encouraging fans to revisit the film in theaters.
Fans can currently watch the final season of Attack on Titan and the compilation film on Crunchyroll. Additionally, a physical release of the film is slated for next year, with a 4K UHD Blu-Ray set to launch in Japan on January 21, 2024.
The anticipation surrounding the remaster reflects the enduring popularity of Attack on Titan and its impact on the anime community. As the release dates approach, discussions among fans are intensifying, with many eager to experience the final battle once more on the big screen.
