Sylvester Stallone’s ‘Alarum’ Surges in Streaming Despite Poor Reviews

After a disappointing debut in theaters and on video-on-demand platforms, Sylvester Stallone’s latest film, Alarum, has unexpectedly gained traction on streaming services. Initially released in select U.S. theaters and on demand on January 17, 2025, the spy-action movie struggled to generate excitement during its theatrical run. Against expectations, it has now climbed into the Top Ten charts on Amazon Prime, currently sitting at number nine alongside iconic films such as Interstellar and the James Bond series.
Directed by Michael Polish, Alarum features a star-studded cast, including the legendary Stallone, Willa Fitzgerald, and Mike Colter. Despite the potential for box-office success with such an ensemble, the film failed to resonate with critics and audiences alike. It earned a dismal 0% rating on Rotten Tomatoes from 22 critics, while audience scores were only slightly better at 15%.
The film’s plot, which draws comparisons to the popular Mr. & Mrs. Smith, follows a married couple, Joe and Lara, who are off-the-grid spies. Their winter retreat quickly turns into a battleground as they are pursued by former employers. Stallone plays a mentor figure, and Colter portrays a formidable operative tracking them down. Despite its intriguing premise, critics have described Alarum as “visually confused” and “narratively incoherent,” with one review highlighting it as “a masterclass in how not to edit a chase sequence.”
So, what accounts for its recent rise in streaming popularity? Star power may play a significant role. The name of Sylvester Stallone alone carries considerable weight internationally, while Scott Eastwood’s fan base also contributes to its visibility. The film’s thumbnail on Prime Video, coupled with an algorithm favoring engaging content and viewers seeking something new to binge, has propelled Alarum back into the spotlight.
Stallone, a household name in the entertainment industry, has a history of both celebrated and critically panned films. He once humorously acknowledged his less successful projects, such as the 1992 comedy Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot, which holds a 14% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. In 2024, he starred in the action thriller Armor, which also received a 0% score from critics, mirroring the performance of Alarum.
As Stallone continues to navigate the complexities of the film industry, the resurgence of Alarum on streaming platforms demonstrates the unpredictable nature of audience engagement. With the right combination of star power and timing, even a film that underperformed at the box office can find a second life in the digital realm.
