Wamac Gears Up for 16th Annual Easter Egg Hunt on April 5

Wamac is preparing for its 16th Annual Easter Egg Hunt, set to take place on April 5, 2024. The event, which promises to be a highlight for local families, is seeking community support through donations of bicycles, Easter baskets, and toys to enhance the festivities.

Mayor Butch Mathus emphasized the importance of community involvement, stating, “I got plenty of volunteers, and that is great. I need other items. I would be grateful for whatever we receive.” The event aims to create a joyful experience for children, with the Easter Bunny making a special appearance to ensure everyone enjoys the day.

Event Details and Preparations

The Wamac City Council has purchased 15,000 plastic eggs from Sunny Bunny Easter Eggs at a cost of $2,235. The festivities will commence at 1 p.m. at the Wamac City Park. Organizers are currently preparing 700 gift bags to distribute to children during the hunt, which is expected to draw families from various regions.

Families are advised to arrive at least an hour early to obtain tickets for their child’s respective age group. The hunt will feature eggs divided among three age categories: 0-4, 5-8, and 9-12. Each group will have the opportunity to search for a total of 5,000 eggs.

A Growing Tradition

The Easter Egg Hunt has a rich history in Wamac, originating after the disbandment of the Centralia Jacees, which previously organized similar events. Mayor Mathus recalled the modest beginnings of the hunt: “We didn’t have an Easter egg hunt in the area for a couple of years. I brought it up to my council that we need an Easter egg hunt, and they agreed. It started out slow, and we only had a couple of kids.”

Today, the event has seen tremendous growth, attracting families from surrounding towns such as Salem, Mount Vernon, and Irvington, as well as visitors from out of state. “We have children from all over. I remember we had a family from Ohio come for many years,” Mathus noted. He added, “We will turn away no child. Remember, it is all for the kids.”

The dedication of the Wamac community has been instrumental in the success of the Easter Egg Hunt. Mayor Mathus expressed gratitude for the support received, stating, “The support from the community has been great. Tip of the hat for everybody.”

As the countdown to the event continues, local residents are encouraged to contribute to make this year’s Easter Egg Hunt the best yet. The emphasis on community spirit and participation highlights the event’s role as a cherished tradition in Wamac.
