Zachary Launches New Recycling Program with Waste Management

The city of Zachary has announced a new partnership with Waste Management aimed at enhancing residential recycling services. Under this initiative, weekly recycling collections will occur on designated days based on residents’ locations, specifically falling on either Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, or Friday. Those interested in participating can sign up through the Waste Management website.
Residents are advised that while they may keep their existing 18-gallon bins, Waste Management will cease collecting recyclables from these containers once the new 96-gallon green carts with gold lids are implemented. This change is part of a broader effort to streamline recycling processes, utilizing automated collection trucks rather than the older rear-load system.
Recycling Cart Guidelines and Accepted Materials
According to a recent news release from the city, important guidelines for the new recycling program include specific instructions on cart usage. Residents must place their carts curbside the night before collection day, as pickups will start at 05:00. It is essential to position the garbage and recycling carts at least three feet apart from each other and any obstacles to facilitate efficient collection.
Recyclables need to be placed loose in the new carts, meaning no bags or liners should be used. The following materials are accepted for recycling:
– Newspapers, magazines, and scrap paper
– Flattened cardboard
– Plastics labeled No. 1 through No. 7, including rinsed milk and juice cartons
– Rinsed aluminum and tin food or beverage cans
– Cereal boxes, cracker boxes (without liners), and rinsed juice/milk cartons
Conversely, certain items are not accepted in the recycling program. These include:
– Plastic bags, foam packaging, and bubble wrap
– Glass bottles or containers
– Soiled paper products such as diapers and napkins
– Hazardous waste, including electronics and batteries
– Clothing, furniture, and other non-recyclable materials
Understanding these guidelines is crucial for residents to contribute effectively to the city’s recycling efforts.
Updated Garbage and Recycling Rates
The city has also set forth new rates for garbage and recycling services, effective from 2025. For residents living within city limits, the standard rate for garbage is set at $33.30, which includes $24.50 for garbage collection and $8.80 for recycling services. Notably, senior residents will benefit from a reduced rate of $18.15, broken down into $13.75 for garbage and $4.40 for recycling.
This initiative not only aims to improve recycling efficiency in Zachary but also encourages residents to actively participate in sustainable waste management practices. By adhering to the outlined guidelines and utilizing the new carts, the community can contribute significantly to environmental conservation efforts.
