Jets Legend Nick Mangold Passes Away at 41 After Health Struggles

Former New York Jets center Nick Mangold passed away on Saturday night at the age of 41 due to complications arising from kidney disease. His health struggles included the need for a kidney transplant, which he had recently revealed on social media.

Born in Westerville, Ohio, Mangold was a standout player at Ohio State University, where he earned All-Big Ten honors twice and contributed to the team’s victory in the 2002 National Championship game against Miami. Drafted by the Jets in 2006, he quickly became a fan favorite, known for his impressive work ethic and distinctive long hair.

A Legacy of Excellence on the Field

Over his 11-season career with the Jets, Mangold earned a reputation as one of the premier centers in the NFL. He was named First-team All-Pro in both 2009 and 2010, and a Second-team All-Pro in 2011. His contributions were pivotal in helping the Jets rank in the top ten for rushing yards six times, including leading the league in 2009. Additionally, he played a crucial role in the Jets’ journey to the AFC Championship games in 2010 and 2011.

In 2022, Mangold was honored with induction into the Jets’ Ring of Honor, a testament to his lasting impact on the franchise. Just last week, he was among the 52 Modern-Era players advancing towards potential induction into the 2026 Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Jets owner Woody Johnson expressed deep sorrow following Mangold’s passing. In a statement, he highlighted Mangold’s significance to the team, saying, “Nick was more than a legendary center. He was the heartbeat of our offensive line for a decade and a beloved teammate whose leadership and toughness defined an era of Jets football.” Johnson also emphasized Mangold’s character off the field, noting his “wit, warmth, and unwavering loyalty” as qualities that endeared him to teammates and fans alike.

A Cherished Family Man

Mangold is survived by his wife, Jenny, and their four children: Matthew, Eloise, Thomas, and Charlotte. In his statement, Johnson extended heartfelt condolences to Mangold’s family, friends, and all who loved him, affirming, “Nick Mangold will forever be a Jet.”

As the football community reflects on his remarkable career and personal qualities, Mangold’s legacy as both an exceptional athlete and a beloved member of the Jets family will endure. His contributions to the sport and his unwavering spirit will be remembered by fans and players alike.
