Remembering Carolyn Hacker: A Life of Love and Community Service

Carolyn Mailliard Hacker, aged 87, passed away on November 21, 2025, due to complications from Alzheimer’s disease. Her death occurred at her home in San Rafael, California, where she had lived for over six decades. Carolyn was a cherished figure within her community, known for her commitment to service, family, and her passion for gardening.

Born in San Francisco in 1938, Carolyn was the eldest daughter of J.W. Mailliard and Margaret Field. She came from a family with deep roots in the Bay Area, with connections spanning across places like San Geronimo, Cotati, and Yorkville. During her early years, Carolyn traveled frequently due to her father’s service in the United States Army. Following World War II, the family settled back in San Francisco, where she received her education at KD Burke School, Katherine Branson Girls School, and later at Connecticut College for Women.

In 1963, Carolyn established her home in San Rafael, marking the beginning of a long and fulfilling life in the area. She was an avid gardener, taking great pride in her plants and winning numerous awards at the Marin County Fair. Her love for gardening was matched by her hobbies in knitting and genealogy, where she dedicated countless hours to researching and preserving her family’s history for future generations.

Carolyn’s community involvement was significant, particularly in education. From 1972 to 1980, she held various roles within the Miller Creek Elementary School District and the San Rafael City Schools District. Her commitment to education reflected her belief in the importance of giving back to the community she loved. Friends and family remember her as a dedicated volunteer whose impact will be felt for years to come.

She leaves behind a loving family, including her husband, Paul Hacker; her daughters, Barbara (Greg) and Lyn (Don); her grandchildren, Andrew (Katy), Chris, Emily (Mike), Amanda, and Kevin; and her great-granddaughter, Jocelyn. Carolyn is also survived by her sisters, Kathy and Margot, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A Celebration of Life is planned for May 2026, coinciding with Carolyn’s birthday and Mother’s Day. In lieu of flowers, her family requests memorial contributions be made to the San Rafael Public Library Foundation or the Marin Humane Society.

Carolyn Hacker’s legacy of love, community service, and family devotion will continue to inspire those who knew her.
