Community members in Ceres, California, came together on March 5, 2024, to honor the life of 14-year-old Amari Peterson, who was tragically killed in a mass shooting in nearby Stockton nearly two weeks earlier. The vigil took place at Whitmore Park and was organized by the Ceres Jr. Bulldogs football league, where Amari played.
Emotions ran high throughout the evening as dozens gathered to share memories, light candles, and pray for Amari’s family. Attendees embraced one another, tears streaming down their faces as they remembered the vibrant young athlete nicknamed ‘Ferari Mari’. Former coaches and teammates expressed their grief, reflecting on the loss of a promising future.
Tributes and Memories Shared
During the vigil, Umar Muriset, one of Amari’s former football coaches, reflected on the tragic loss. “This wonderful kid was special, different, and a great athlete,” he said, visibly emotional. Joe Estrada, another coach who helped organize the event, echoed this sentiment, stating, “Any time a child loses his life to violence, it hurts. He doesn’t have the opportunity to go to high school or live his life.”
Amari wore the number 14 while playing for the Ceres Jr. Bulldogs, and plans are in place to honor his memory by featuring his jersey number on next season’s uniforms. The football program is also raising funds to support Amari’s family during this difficult time.
