Danielle Shoykhet Becomes Beachwood’s First Female Council President

On January 5, 2024, Danielle Shoykhet made history by being elected as Beachwood’s first female City Council president. Her appointment was confirmed with unanimous support from her fellow council members during a ceremony that also saw the swearing in of several officials, including Mayor Justin Berns, who begins his second term.

Judge Francine Goldberg of the Cuyahoga County Domestic Relations Court administered the oath of office to Berns, who ran unopposed in the November elections. Goldberg reflected on the mayor’s journey, recalling how she had previously administered his oath when he first joined the council a decade ago and again four years ago when he assumed the mayoral role. The meeting also saw the swearing in of Councilman Alec Isaacson, who has previously held the council president position, and Councilman Pete Smith. Additionally, Alex Jacobs took her oath for her first term, administered by her husband, Paul.

New Leadership and Future Goals

The council also elected Jillian DeLong as its new vice president. In her acceptance statement, Shoykhet expressed gratitude to her colleagues for their confidence in her leadership. She emphasized the importance of their collaborative spirit and the diverse perspectives that contribute to their strength as a council. “We do not always see every issue the same way, but our different perspectives is what I believe makes us stronger,” she stated.

Shoykhet underscored her commitment to maintaining a positive working relationship with Mayor Berns and his administration, emphasizing the shared goal of best serving Beachwood residents. She acknowledged the leadership of Isaacson during his four-year term, describing him as an “extraordinary example.”

Looking ahead, Shoykhet outlined immediate goals for the council, which include establishing committee memberships and leadership roles. She aims to prioritize a legislative agenda that promotes clarity and purpose in their work. “Thank you for trusting me with this honorable responsibility,” she concluded. “I care deeply about the Beachwood community and serving alongside all of you.”

A Shift Towards Diversity

During the meeting, District 11 Cuyahoga County Councilwoman Sunny Simon highlighted the significance of Shoykhet’s election in the context of diversity. She recalled a time over a decade ago when Beachwood’s council was entirely male, making it one of only two cities in the district with such representation. “I am so pleased today to see a diverse set of council people and leaders in the city of Beachwood,” Simon remarked, expressing pride in the shift towards inclusive leadership.

Currently, the Beachwood City Council features a majority of women, including Shoykhet, DeLong, and Councilwomen June Taylor, Ali Stern, and Alex Jacobs. Isaacson and Smith are now the only male representatives on the council.

Also addressing the attendees was Eric Synenberg, Ohio District 21 State Representative and former Beachwood councilman. His presence underscored the community’s support for its newly elected leaders.

Judge Goldberg commended Mayor Berns for his accomplishments during his first term. She noted significant initiatives, including the city’s $8 million purchase of the former Fairmount Temple property in June 2024 and the recent addition of an electronic reader board sign at City Hall. Goldberg praised Berns for his leadership qualities, including his attention to detail and his ability to communicate effectively with both council members and residents.

In a lighter moment, she mentioned Berns’ participation in the upcoming Dopey Challenge at Disney World, where he will run a total of 48.6 miles over four days. This personal achievement reflects his dedication not only to his role as mayor but also to physical fitness.

As Beachwood embarks on this new chapter of leadership, Shoykhet’s presidency marks a significant milestone for the community, promising a collaborative and inclusive approach to governance.
