Esteemed Nurse Edith Anne Shannon Passes Away at 78

Edith Anne Rachel Shannon, a respected nurse and mother, passed away on October 9, 2025, at the age of 78. Born on November 6, 1946, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, she dedicated her life to healthcare, impacting countless lives over her remarkable 50-year career in anesthesia.

Raised by her parents, Anne Evelyn Elko (Cano) and Lawrence James Gray, Shannon excelled academically. She graduated from West Mifflin North High School before pursuing nursing at the Shadyside School of Nursing in Pittsburgh. Her commitment to her profession led her to work as a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) at several hospitals, including Arlington Hospital in Virginia, Lakeland Hospital in Elkhorn, West Allis Memorial Hospital, and Mercy Hospital in Janesville. She also completed numerous locum tenens assignments, further showcasing her dedication to nursing.

Shannon’s family life was marked by both joy and tragedy. She is preceded in death by her beloved daughter, Christen Michaela Shannon, and her partner, James Patrick “Jimmy” Shannon. She is survived by her daughters, Carol Marie “Carie” Gitlin (Jeff), Catherine “Kate” Irene Shannon, and Cailan Michelle Shannon. Her legacy continues through her grandchildren: Chase and Jenna Gitlin, along with Michaela Shannon Cowen.

A funeral mass to honor her life will take place at 11:00 AM on December 5, 2025, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Elkhorn, Wisconsin, followed by a luncheon for family and friends. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to St. Joseph’s Indian School or Doctors Without Borders, organizations that align with Shannon’s values of compassion and service.

Throughout her career, Shannon was known for her unwavering commitment to patient care and her ability to make those around her feel valued. Colleagues remember her not only for her professional skills but also for her kindness and mentorship. As she is mourned by family, friends, and colleagues, her contributions to the field of nursing will not be forgotten.
