Residents of Hopkinton and Contoocook benefit from the dedicated efforts of local volunteers through the Dial-A-Ride Program, which offers free transportation to seniors. On October 24, 2025, an appreciation lunch was held at the Slusser Center to honor these volunteers, including Allita Dunn, who has contributed her time to the program for the past 12 years.
Dunn’s motivation to volunteer is deeply personal. Her experience caring for her mother in Florida, who relied on volunteers for transportation to appointments and essential errands, inspired her to give back. “I was made aware of the need, and it’s my way of giving back,” Dunn shared. “Sometimes I think of my mother when I’m doing it.”
The Dial-A-Ride Program operates five days a week, utilizing the personal vehicles of volunteers to transport residents to various locations, including grocery stores, medical appointments, and social engagements. Volunteers play a crucial role in not only facilitating transportation but also providing companionship for those who may feel isolated.
Community Impact and Volunteer Dedication
Another volunteer, Carol Haless, emphasized the social aspect of the service. “They’re stuck in their homes. They can’t get out,” Haless stated. “We’ll take them to the hair salon to have their hair done, because that’s important for your mental wellness, which is all part of living.” Many volunteers, having witnessed the positive impact of such services on their own family members, are driven to support their community in similar ways.
Among the dedicated volunteers is Cettie Connolly, who previously traveled to Massachusetts to assist her sister when that community lacked a similar program. Now, as a board member and driver for the Dial-A-Ride Program, she finds the experience rewarding. “You get more back than what you’re giving,” Connolly noted. “Their stories are really interesting.”
Despite the program’s longstanding presence, many residents remain unaware of its availability. Organizers continually seek new volunteers, not only for driving but also for scheduling and administrative tasks. The flexible nature of volunteering allows drivers to accept or decline ride requests based on their availability, making it an appealing option for those looking to contribute without a significant commitment.
Volunteering as a Lifeline
Dunn highlighted the importance of this flexibility, stating, “I feel useful and enjoy it. This is what a community does.” She expressed her disbelief at the thought of being unable to drive, particularly in a town where distances are relatively short.
The Dial-A-Ride Program stands as a testament to community spirit and the impact of volunteerism. By providing essential transportation services, volunteers not only enhance the quality of life for seniors but also foster social connections that are vital for mental and emotional well-being. As the program continues to grow, its commitment to serving the community remains unwavering, ensuring that no resident is left without access to necessary resources and companionship.
