Karl Strauss Brewing Company, a key player in San Diego’s craft beer scene, has announced plans to open a new brewpub in Santee at 9812 Mission Gorge Road. The establishment will occupy the former space of Mimi’s Café and is expected to open sometime in 2024. Although a specific opening date has yet to be confirmed, the new location is anticipated to reflect the company’s successful 4S Ranch brewpub model, combining casual dining with a wide selection of local craft beers.
Founded in 1989 by Chris Cramer and Matt Rattner, with mentorship from the late Master Brewer Karl M. Strauss, the brewery has played a significant role in shaping San Diego’s craft brewing movement. Karl Strauss, originally from Minden, Germany, was instrumental in launching the city’s first modern brewpub and has influenced numerous independent brewers over the years.
Since its inception, Karl Strauss Brewing Company has grown to include nine brewpubs throughout Southern California. These locations, which range from Carlsbad to Costa Mesa, are designed to resonate with their local communities while prioritizing handcrafted beer, fresh food, and a welcoming environment.
The menu at Karl Strauss typically features a rotating selection of house-brewed beers, including popular options like Red Trolley Ale, Tower X West Coast IPA, and Boat Shoes Hazy IPA. Guests can also enjoy an array of elevated pub fare, such as burgers, tacos, and shareable plates.
