The Marianna City Commission recognized Sergeant David Herndon of the Marianna Police Department on Tuesday night, honoring him with the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) National Law Enforcement Public Servant Citation. This accolade acknowledges his exceptional service and unwavering commitment to public safety, an achievement celebrated by colleagues and community members alike.
VFW Award Presentation Highlights Commitment to Service
During a formal presentation, Tyler Schaeffer from the VFW noted that Herndon was nominated for the award by MPD Captain Tyler Scarborough. Schaeffer explained the significance of the award, stating, “Each year, the Veterans of Foreign Wars selects emergency medical technicians, law enforcement officers, firefighters, dispatchers, and explosive ordinance disposal technicians to receive the VFW Public Servant Awards. The importance of this award is to recognize the efforts of those responsible for public safety.”
He continued, emphasizing the special meaning this recognition holds for veterans. “When we leave our families to serve, we do so trusting that dedicated first responder personnel like Sergeant Herndon are safeguarding our communities with professionalism, integrity, and courage,” Schaeffer said. “Sergeant Herndon exemplifies those qualities every day.”
Colleagues describe Herndon as a reliable and selfless leader, always ready to support others, whether in a prominent role or quietly behind the scenes. His impact is felt throughout the department, reflecting a career dedicated to service over personal recognition.
Personal Connections and Family Heritage
Following the ceremony, Sergeant Herndon expressed deep gratitude for the acknowledgment. “To be recognized by the patrol division, the guys and ladies I work with, that means so much to me,” he said. “That’s who I do this for.”
Herndon shared the award’s personal significance, linking it to his family’s military heritage. His grandfather, Sergeant Charles T. Green, served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War with the 173rd Airborne Division and was a proud member of the VFW. “He was one of my biggest inspirations for doing what I do today,” Herndon reflected. “To be presented this award by the VFW means more to me than I can describe.”
Known affectionately as “Sarge” by friends and fellow officers, Green’s legacy continues to resonate with Herndon. “Most everyone calls me the same,” he stated, highlighting the significance of his nickname. On special occasions, he wears his grandfather’s chevrons on his uniform collar, a tribute to their shared commitment to service. “I’ll wear them tonight in honor of him,” Herndon remarked during the ceremony.
Sergeant David Herndon’s recognition serves as a poignant reminder of the dedication that law enforcement personnel bring to their communities. His career reflects the values of service and humility, a legacy passed down through generations, ensuring the safety and well-being of those he serves.
