New Fast-Food Venture: Burgers or Wings on I-35?

A new dining concept is emerging at 9911 I-35 Frontage Rd in San Antonio, as local entrepreneur Ted Baker prepares to launch his latest venture, Ray’s World Famous Chili Burgers, but with a twist. A recent job listing revealed plans for a Wing Stop, raising questions about Baker’s ultimate direction for the establishment.

Baker, known for his California-inspired burger joint, aims to open the restaurant before the end of 2026. His vision pays homage to Los Angeles’s iconic Tommy’s Burger, focusing on high-quality chili burgers without variations, similar to the streamlined offerings of In-N-Out. In addition to the main dish, Baker plans to serve freshly cut fries fried in lard, enhancing the overall experience.

While his initial ambition centered on burgers, Baker’s recent visit to a local Wing Stop shifted his perspective. He noted that wings might be a more feasible option for mass production. “I built a burger spot, but that’s going to cost more to open, and I can’t open them just as fast,” he explained, highlighting the practical considerations behind his evolving business strategy.

Baker’s culinary pursuits are part of a broader initiative through his brand, the Cali group, which encompasses various food and beverage operations, including restaurant repair. His goal is to create a memorable and efficient dining experience. “We want to make sure that service at our place is just like Raising Cane’s; it’s less than two minutes to get whatever food you want,” Baker stated.

Planning for the restaurant includes a double drive-thru and two walk-up windows, designed to facilitate quick service for customers on the go. Despite uncertainty surrounding the final concept, Baker remains optimistic about the future of Ray’s World Famous Chili Burgers.

As the project develops, potential patrons are encouraged to keep an eye on updates regarding the opening date. The burgers may soon become a staple in San Antonio, promising a blend of speed and quality that Baker is determined to deliver. For those intrigued, visiting Baker’s establishment at 9911 I-35 Frontage Rd in 2026 could provide an opportunity to experience this unique culinary offering firsthand.
