New Year-Round Halloween Bar Opens in Portland, Attracts Enthusiasts

A new dining experience has emerged in Portland with the opening of the Zero Bar & Grille, a year-round Halloween-themed bar and restaurant. Located at 155 Riverside Street, this vibrant venue occupies the space formerly held by Volcano Restaurant Bar & Grill and officially opened its doors in October 2023.

The expansive establishment spans 9,000 square feet and features an entertainment area called Club Zero, which is situated at the rear of the building. This dedicated space can accommodate up to 175 guests and hosts a DJ every Friday and Saturday night. The bar and restaurant itself can seat 200 customers comfortably, making it an ideal spot for gatherings.

Owner Liv True has infused her passion for Halloween into every aspect of the bar. The exterior showcases oversized skeletons and gargoyles, while the interior is adorned with a variety of spooky decorations. True, a first-time bar and restaurant owner, has drawn inspiration from her previous experience working for four years at Seasons Grille & Bar, which occupied the same space prior to Volcano.

In an effort to bring a unique flair to the menu, True has crafted dishes with Halloween-themed names such as the Afterlife Melt, Graveyard Griller, and Crypt Crisps. The drink selection includes festive options like a Bloody Screwdriver and a Graveyard Mud Pie for dessert.

True’s love for dogs is reflected in her creation of a special meal for canine companions. Named after her own dog, Zero, who is inspired by the ghost dog from The Nightmare Before Christmas, this doggie meal features rice, grilled chicken, broccoli, cauliflower, and carrots. A portion of the proceeds from these meals and treats will be donated to a rotating animal shelter, emphasizing True’s commitment to her community.

To enhance the experience for patrons with dogs, Zero Bar & Grille offers outdoor seating equipped with water bowls and dog cots, ensuring a welcoming atmosphere for four-legged friends.

The venue aims to provide an engaging experience throughout the week, with operating hours from 16:00 to 22:00 from Monday to Thursday and 16:00 to 01:00 on weekends. Various events are scheduled, including karaoke, music bingo, cribbage, and live performances by bands and DJs. True has also incorporated five pool tables into the space to facilitate league play, maximizing the venue’s potential.

“I’m utilizing every square inch of this space so that I can recoup some of the money I put into it,” True stated, reflecting her pragmatic approach to running the establishment.

With its distinctive theme and community-focused spirit, Zero Bar & Grille is poised to become a popular destination for both Halloween enthusiasts and locals looking for a unique dining experience in Portland’s vibrant culinary scene.
