NYPD and Candlelighters Spread Holiday Joy to Families in Need

On December 14, 2023, the New York Police Department (NYPD) collaborated with the Candlelighters charity to create a festive atmosphere for families affected by childhood cancer at the Central Park Precinct. This initiative aimed to provide a joyful holiday experience for families from various backgrounds, including those who have traveled internationally to access medical care for their children.

As snow gently fell on Central Park, the NYPD stationhouse was transformed into a vibrant holiday wonderland. Children were greeted by beloved superhero characters, including Spider-Man, alongside NYPD officers and their K-9 unit. The event allowed children to interact with the dogs and even experience police technology firsthand.

Among the families present was the Negodiuk family, who fled Ukraine due to the ongoing conflict and sought medical treatment for their son, Mark, who has been diagnosed with brain cancer. Dima Negodiuk, Mark’s father, recounted their harrowing journey, highlighting the immense challenges they faced while escaping their homeland.

“We drove a car, we saw tanks. We saw military guys. And when you don’t know if it’s your guys or it’s the Russian enemy. And also, we crossed the border, we came to Poland, and another organization helped us with tickets. And we came here. We started to live in Ronald McDonald House,” said Dima, expressing his gratitude for the support they received.

Barbara Zobian, a representative from Candlelighters, emphasized the importance of such celebrations. She noted that children battling serious illnesses often miss out on the joys of childhood, and events like this aim to restore some of that lost joy. “Kids are heroes when they shouldn’t be. They should just be kids,” Zobian stated. “When kids can go to school, they are happiest. There’s no complaining. They’re excited to go. They come here in the snow. It’s cold. Other kids wouldn’t want to get up. They’re joyful. They are just kids, happy and making memories.”

The event reached a festive climax with the arrival of Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus, who were escorted by the NYPD Highway Patrol. The children’s excitement was palpable as they rushed to greet the iconic figures, presenting their holiday wish lists and sharing moments of joy.

Detective Luis Moreira spoke about the significance of the occasion. “We’re not just here to celebrate joy. We’re here for hope. We’re here for the opportunity for kids to see tomorrow and have Christmas every single year,” he remarked. Moreira expressed the emotional impact of connecting with families from all over the world, including those from Ukraine, who expressed their thanks for the support provided during such challenging times.

This collaboration between the NYPD and Candlelighters not only highlights the importance of community support but also reflects a broader commitment to providing hope and joy to families facing adversity. The holiday experience served as a reminder that, despite their struggles, these children can enjoy moments of happiness and togetherness.

As the event concluded, families left with smiles, hopeful for the future. The NYPD and Candlelighters continue to demonstrate that kindness and compassion can make a significant difference in the lives of those navigating difficult circumstances.
