Oscar Smith High School’s senior wide receiver Travis Johnson has been named the Virginia High School League (VHSL) Class 6 Offensive Player of the Year. His exceptional performance on the field, which included 56 receptions for 1,157 yards and 15 touchdowns, solidified his position as one of the top players in the state. Johnson’s achievements come during his second consecutive all-state season, and he has committed to continue his football career at Michigan University.
In addition to Johnson’s accolade, Chris Scott, head coach of the Oscar Smith Tigers, received recognition as the Coach of the Year. Under Scott’s leadership, the team captured its second consecutive Class 6 title and the fourth championship of his tenure.
The Tigers’ success is underscored by a strong roster, with seven players joining Johnson on the first team. This includes junior quarterback Lonnie Andrews, senior offensive lineman Dory Wilson, sophomore defensive lineman Lincoln Halliday, senior linebacker Malachi White, senior defensive back Jayden Covil, senior punt returner Quali Price, and senior all-purpose player Na’Rod Jarvis. The second team featured senior tight end Charles McGlown and Jarvis again, this time as a linebacker.
Oscar Smith’s impressive performance culminated in a 33-20 victory over Indian River, which took place at Oscar Smith High School in Chesapeake, Virginia, on September 20, 2025. This victory further highlighted the team’s dominance in the state rankings.
Meanwhile, in collegiate football, Old Dominion University is experiencing significant roster changes. Starting tight end Jailen Butler has announced his intention to enter the transfer portal, as reported by sports journalist Pete Nakos of On3 Sports. Standing at 6 feet 4 inches and weighing 245 pounds, Butler has made 21 starts, recording 18 catches for 103 yards and one touchdown during his career at Old Dominion.
Butler is not alone in his decision; he will join quarterback Colton Joseph and running back Trequan Jones in seeking new opportunities through the transfer portal. In contrast, the Monarchs have received a commitment from running back Hunter Patterson, who is transferring from Division II West Liberty University. Patterson showcased his talent with an impressive performance, rushing for 1,219 yards and 17 touchdowns on 174 carries, while also catching 33 passes for 418 yards and three touchdowns during the previous season.
In women’s collegiate soccer, two players from Christopher Newport University earned the prestigious Scholar All-Region honors. Senior midfielder Hanna Heaton, hailing from Gloucester, and junior goalkeeper Amy Sidaway were recognized for their academic and athletic excellence. Heaton, a repeat selection, has continued the program’s tradition of success, marking the eighth consecutive year that at least one player has been acknowledged for her achievements both on the field and in the classroom.
To qualify for the Scholar All-Region award, players must be juniors or seniors with a cumulative GPA of at least 3.40 while participating in a minimum of 75% of their games.
These recognitions in both high school and collegiate sports highlight the dedication and talent of athletes across Virginia and beyond, showcasing their achievements on and off the field.
