Oxfordshire Barn Transformed into Vibrant Family Retreat

A former agricultural barn in the Oxfordshire countryside has undergone a stunning transformation into a vibrant family retreat. Designed by Cath Beckett and Liv Wallers from the British interior design studio Yellow London, this unique space now serves as a venue for family gatherings, reading sessions, and sleepovers, breaking away from traditional farmhouse aesthetics.

The project began with a clear vision: to create the ultimate party barn, prioritizing versatility and character. Rather than simply converting the barn into a bar or entertainment zone, the designers crafted a lively space focused on a library, featuring a striking bright red ladder. The standalone structure is located just across the yard from the clients’ main house, which Yellow London had previously worked on.

Cath Beckett emphasizes the importance of the barn’s rural setting in the design process. The inclusion of large glass doors on both sides of the building not only allows natural light to flood the interior but also connects the space to the surrounding landscape. “The barn is located in the Oxfordshire countryside, and the rural setting played an important role in the design,” she explains.

The design duo seized the opportunity to push creative boundaries. While the main house boasts its own layered colors and patterns, the barn served as a canvas for bolder choices. “We went bolder in the barn for sure, but they also liked the use of color and pattern throughout the main house,” Beckett notes.

The clients sought a multifunctional space for entertaining guests during the festive season, enjoying quiet moments, and providing a playful environment for children. The design brief required a seamless transition from day to night while celebrating the building’s architectural features.

Upon their initial assessment, Beckett and Wallers found the barn filled with remnants of its agricultural past. However, its soaring height and original beamed ceiling provided a strong foundation for the design. “Structurally, it had strong architectural features, including exposed beams and generous ceiling height,” Beckett recounts. “We saw clear potential to retain that character while adapting the space for modern family life.”

The designers chose to embrace the barn’s original attributes rather than strip them away. They layered in vibrant colors and patterns to create a contemporary, family-friendly environment. Before stepping inside, visitors encounter a dramatic entrance created by a heavy velvet curtain, which elevates the transition into the barn. Beckett describes the entrance as heightening the sense of theatre.

Once inside, the main entertaining area captivates with its blend of striking colors and patterns. The bespoke joinery, painted in an unexpected red, stands out dramatically against the historic backdrop. “The GP&J Baker fabric on the statement sofa was our starting point for the color palette,” Beckett explains. This bold choice has not only grounded the design but has also infused the room with personality.

The library-style joinery, complete with a bold ladder, serves as the centerpiece of the entertaining space. The saturated tones add warmth to the barn’s expansive proportions while drawing the eye upward to a hidden mezzanine level. This loft area was designed to provide practical storage and an elevated nook functioning as a study and children’s bunk room.

Flexibility was a key theme in the design, ensuring the barn accommodates both lively gatherings and intimate family moments. “We wanted the barn to feel adaptable so it could shift easily between different uses, from entertaining to everyday family life,” Beckett states. The layout, including the mezzanine addition and generous seating areas, reflects this intention.

Accessed by a classic library ladder, the loft creates a hidden den feel, enhancing the overall charm of the barn. “The best view of the barn is looking down from the mezzanine,” Beckett observes. This vantage point showcases the impressive ceiling height and the colorful furnishings while allowing for natural light to illuminate the space.

In a further effort to maintain the barn’s rustic charm, the designers incorporated existing materials, such as old cartwheels, transformed into chandeliers. “We got them electrified and sprayed in eye-catching red paint to match the joinery,” Beckett explains, adding a playful touch to the design.

The combination of architectural features and whimsical elements creates an inviting atmosphere throughout the barn. “We hope people feel welcomed by the playful design of the space,” Beckett adds. “Whether entering for a party, family game night, or quiet afternoon in, the space is designed to make you feel at home and comfortable.”

Ultimately, the success of this barn project lies not in any single design element, but in the overall feeling it evokes. Far more than a converted outbuilding, it has become a vibrant and welcoming space that blends its rustic history with modern imagination. “The barn presents a warm, lived-in aesthetic that highlights comfort and personality,” Beckett concludes.

This remarkable transformation illustrates how a neglected farm building can be reinvented into a colorful, inviting retreat, suitable for any occasion.
