Holding the title of Boeing Professor in AI & Data-Driven Engineering, Kutz has a joint appointment in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) and the Department of Applied Mathematics at UW. His expertise spans machine learning, data science, dynamical systems, scientific computing, and control systems. Kutz’s research employs advanced computational and mathematical techniques across various disciplines, including engineering and the physical and biological sciences.
Kutz’s career is marked by numerous accolades, including being named a Fellow of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) and receiving the National Science Foundation CAREER Award. He served as chair of the UW Department of Applied Mathematics from 2007 to 2015, further solidifying his influence in the academic community.
“I’m honored by this recognition,” Kutz stated. “It reflects the creativity and dedication of the students and collaborators I’ve had the privilege to work with.”
Significance of the Clarivate List
The Clarivate Highly Cited Researchers list identifies scholars who have made a substantial impact in their fields, demonstrated through the publication of numerous highly cited papers over the past decade. The 2025 list includes a total of 7,131 awards from over 1,300 institutions across 60 countries and regions. According to Clarivate, these researchers represent a small fraction of the global academic community but are responsible for a significant portion of advancements in knowledge and innovation.
The selection process is based on data and analysis provided by bibliometric experts and data scientists at Clarivate’s Institute for Scientific Information. Researchers included in the list are those whose work ranks among the top 1% of citations for their field and publication year according to the Web of Science citation index.
Professor Kutz joins a notable group of faculty within the UW ECE department recognized for their contributions to science and engineering. For more information about the achievements of UW ECE faculty, visit the Faculty Highlights webpage.
