Remembering Edith Furst Howell: A Legacy of Love and Community

Edith Furst Howell, a cherished member of the Winnetka community, passed away peacefully on October 25, 2025, at the age of 97. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Warren Howell, with whom she shared a life dedicated to family and community.

Born on March 2, 1928, in Chicago, Illinois, Edith was a fourth-generation Chicagoan. She was the daughter of William H. Furst and Edith E. Furst. She is survived by her two daughters, Elizabeth MacCallum of New Vernon, New Jersey, and Suzanne Smythe of Shaker Heights, Ohio, along with four grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and her brother, William C. Furst, residing in Glencoe, Illinois.

A Life Dedicated to Family and Community

Edith attended New Trier High School before continuing her education at Vassar College and Northwestern University. It was at the Harris Trust and Savings Bank that she met her future husband, Bill. The couple married in 1953 and established their family in Winnetka, where they became actively involved in village affairs, contributing to the preservation of the community’s unique character.

Her passion for interior design led her to create a successful design business, showcasing her creativity and eye for aesthetics. Edith’s interests extended beyond design; she was an avid gardener and flower arranger. She was a proud member of both the Garden Club of Winnetka and the Green Meadows Garden Club, where her love for nature flourished.

A Lasting Legacy

Edith’s family has planned a private celebration of her life, honoring her memory and the impact she had on those around her.
