In a recent edition of “Pet Talk,” trainer Sally Cragin shared vital insights on essential commands for dog training. For new dog owners, mastering basic commands not only enhances communication but also fosters a stronger bond between pets and their humans.
Starting with the Basics
Crucial commands to teach your dog include “come,” “sit,” “lie down,” and “leave it.” These foundational commands are especially emphasized for therapy pets under the TheraPAWS program. Training should commence as early as possible, and it is essential that the process remains gentle and consistent.
When teaching commands, simplicity is key. Begin with short phrases, such as “sit.” To reinforce this command, maintain eye contact, gently guide your dog into a sitting position, and offer praise upon success. Positive reinforcement is critical—say “good dog,” smile, and provide physical affection. Dogs respond best to both verbal and physical cues.
Effective Training Techniques
It is important to avoid lengthy instructions, which can confuse your dog. For example, instead of saying, “No, don’t do that — please sit down now,” simply use, “Leave it — sit.” Such clarity helps your dog understand what is expected.
During training sessions, ensure your dog is wearing a collar and is on a nylon leash, as opposed to a retractable one. The nylon leash provides better control and safety, preventing your dog from developing habits of ignoring commands.
Once your dog has mastered “sit,” progress to “stay.” This can be taught by slowly moving backwards while holding up your hand in a stop gesture. Patience is vital; daily practice for a few minutes is recommended to solidify these commands.
Incorporating commands into daily activities reinforces good behavior. For instance, have your dog sit before you pet or feed them. This teaches waiting and can prevent jumping or grabbing at food. When using treats for training, allow your dog multiple opportunities to follow commands to earn rewards.
Cragin emphasizes that every dog can learn with a patient, loving, and consistent approach. By utilizing these techniques, owners can significantly improve their pets’ behavior while enhancing their relationship.
