Flint-area high school athletes have showcased remarkable talent this winter, and the community is invited to celebrate their achievements through the Athlete of the Week poll. The poll, hosted by MLive, highlights athletes competing in various sports including basketball, hockey, bowling, wrestling, swimming, and gymnastics. Voting remains open until 9 a.m. on January 23, 2024, allowing fans to support their favorite athletes.
Votes can be cast as often as desired, but participation through social media or email will not be counted. Coaches and athletic directors are urged to nominate players by contacting [email protected]. Nominations for this week will be accepted until 11:59 p.m. on January 21, 2024.
Nominees for January 12-18
This week’s nominees are a testament to the exceptional talent in the Flint-area sports scene.
Averie Zinn of Genesee made headlines by becoming the 34th player in MHSAA girls basketball history to score 1,000 career points. Zinn achieved this milestone with an impressive 50-point performance against Clio, followed by a remarkable 57 points, 10 rebounds, eight steals, and seven assists in a win over Flint Elite.
Ryenn Becher from Linden also had a standout week, contributing to her team’s success with a total of 40 points, 18 rebounds, and 10 blocks across two games. Meanwhile, Kendra Waller of Burton Bendle scored 28 points and dished out nine assists in a win against Flint Beecher.
In a similar vein, Taleah Lassiter of Flint Hamady secured two victories for her team, recording double-doubles, including an astounding 31 points and 30 rebounds against Genesee on January 13.
The boys’ basketball scene also saw significant performances. Bryson Evans led Flint Kearsley to a 2-0 record with an impressive 24 points against Linden and 20 points against Clio. Andrew Caldwell from Flint Powers Catholic shone bright with 31 points in a crucial win over Saginaw United.
Achievements Across Other Sports
The winter sports season extends beyond basketball, with athletes excelling in swimming and wrestling as well. In swimming, Ethan McKendry from Grand Blanc captured four first-place finishes at the Genesee County Meet, impressively clocking 47.15 seconds in the 100 freestyle and 1:43.96 in the 200 freestyle.
Teammate Baylor Perkins set a new record in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 56.20 seconds, breaking multiple records including the school, pool, meet, and conference records.
In wrestling, Kyler Campbell of New Lothrop dominated the Varsity Wolfpack Challenge, going 3-0 and securing first place in the 165-pound bracket. His fellow teammate, Knox Severn, also excelled, achieving first place in the 285-pound bracket.
As the voting continues, local fans are encouraged to support these outstanding athletes. Their hard work and dedication are evident in their performances, and the community’s recognition can motivate them further as they strive for excellence in their respective sports.
