U.S. Travelers Urged to Shelter as Violence Erupts in Jalisco

U.S. citizens in Puerto Vallarta and other areas of Jalisco were advised to shelter in place on March 5, 2023, following a violent outbreak triggered by the death of Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, the notorious leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel. The Mexican army confirmed that Oseguera Cervantes, commonly known as “El Mencho,” was killed during a military operation aimed at capturing him.

This incident led to widespread unrest, with reports of roadblocks and vehicles set ablaze across Puerto Vallarta and surrounding regions. Videos circulating on social media depicted thick smoke rising over the city, while panic ensued at the Guadalajara airport, where travelers rushed to evacuate. Many individuals sheltering in hotels and residences shared images of the chaos, highlighting their concerns for family members in the area.

The U.S. Embassy in Mexico issued an urgent alert advising American travelers to avoid areas with significant law enforcement activity, seek shelter, and minimize unnecessary movements. The embassy urged individuals to keep in contact with their families and friends through phone calls and social media to inform them of their safety.

Airlines including United, American, and Delta quickly responded to the situation by issuing travel change waivers for flights to Puerto Vallarta and Guadalajara. Ian Gregor, a spokesperson for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), confirmed that the agency was in close communication with Mexican authorities to manage flight operations. The FAA announced that flights bound for Puerto Vallarta were being diverted as a precautionary measure.

In a statement from the Grupo Aeroportuario del Pacifico, which oversees several airports, including those in Puerto Vallarta and Guadalajara, officials indicated that operations at the international terminal remained unaffected and that security measures were in place. The airport was reportedly under the protection of the National Guard and the Secretariat of National Defense. Despite these assurances, many travelers expressed skepticism on social media, questioning the effectiveness of the security measures as international operations and most domestic flights were canceled that day.

The situation remains fluid, and the embassy continues to monitor developments closely. Officials have reiterated the importance of safety for U.S. citizens in the area and emphasized the need for caution in light of the ongoing unrest.

As this story evolves, further updates will be provided regarding the safety of travelers and any new information from local authorities.
