United Way Prepares 50,000 Meals in Oklahoma for Families in Need

The United Way of South Central Oklahoma is set to host a significant event on March 3, 2024, aiming to prepare over 50,000 meals for families in need across the region. Executive Director Bryce Chitwood discussed the upcoming “Feed the Funnel” packing party during an appearance on the local program “Talk of the Town.” This initiative is part of the organization’s broader commitment to support local communities facing food insecurity.

During the packing party, volunteers will assemble meals that will subsequently be distributed to local food banks. Chitwood emphasized the importance of these efforts, noting that the meals are crucial for families struggling to access nutritious food. The United Way’s initiative highlights the organization’s proactive approach to addressing hunger in South Central Oklahoma.

In addition to the meal packing event, Chitwood announced the launch of Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library in Southern Oklahoma. This program aims to provide children aged 0 to 5 years with a free book every month upon registration. The initiative is designed to promote early literacy and a love for reading among young children in the area.

The Imagination Library is part of a broader strategy to enhance educational resources for families, reinforcing the United Way’s mission to improve lives and strengthen communities. By offering these resources, the organization aims to ensure that children have access to books and the foundational skills necessary for lifelong learning.

The events organized by the United Way reflect a growing recognition of the importance of community support and volunteerism, particularly in challenging economic times. As local families face increased pressures, initiatives such as the meal packing party and the Imagination Library serve as vital lifelines.

For those interested in participating or supporting these initiatives, the United Way encourages community involvement. Volunteers can contribute their time to help with the packing event, while donations are also welcome to assist in sustaining these important programs.

By addressing both immediate needs, such as food security, and long-term educational goals, the United Way of South Central Oklahoma is making strides towards fostering a healthier, more informed community. The organization’s efforts demonstrate a commitment to not only serving those in need but also empowering future generations through education and support.
