Many internal AI projects struggle due to a lack of collaboration across departments. Engineering teams may build models that product managers do not know how to utilize effectively. Data scientists often create prototypes that operations teams find challenging to maintain. Consequently, AI applications may go unused because their intended users were not consulted on what “useful” really means.

2. Establish Clear Rules for AI Autonomy: Organizations often struggle with determining when AI can operate independently versus when human oversight is necessary. Many default to extremes, either imposing excessive human review or allowing AI systems to function without any constraints. Polak advocates for a clear framework that specifies where AI can act autonomously. This includes defining rules such as whether AI can approve routine changes or recommend updates without implementing them.
