Community Mourns Loss of Educator Judith Ernst at 81

Judith Ann Ernst, a beloved educator and community member, passed away unexpectedly at her home in Redondo Beach on October 4, 2025. She was 81 years old. Born on December 20, 1943, in Manhattan Beach, California, Judith, known affectionately as Judy, spent her entire life in the South Bay area.
Judy graduated from Mira Costa High School in 1961 and continued her education at UCLA. Her passion for education led her to establish the Montessori School of Manhattan Beach in 1968 at the age of 24, a remarkable accomplishment for a woman in business during that era. Starting with just twelve students, including her three children, she created an environment where curiosity thrived and kindness was nurtured. Judy’s pioneering spirit and dedication to the Montessori method left a lasting impact on countless families.
Legacy of Adventure and Style
Judy’s zest for life was evident in many aspects of her personality. She embraced challenges with confidence, whether it was free-diving with her husband, John Ernst, or exploring the latest fashion trends. Known for her elegant and classic style, she was often seen dressed impeccably, embodying grace and sophistication.
Her love for sports, particularly tennis, was another defining feature of her life. Judy frequently participated in tournaments alongside her husband and son, Jeff. Even in her later years, her enthusiasm for the game remained strong, showcasing her energetic spirit and competitive nature.
Her family and friends will remember Judy for her adventurous spirit, vibrant style, and unwavering enthusiasm for life. She is survived by her loving husband of 45 years, John, along with her children—Jeff, Greg, Lynn, Darlyn, and Leila—and her eleven grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ardith and Herral Jones, her daughter Nadine, and a grandson and great-grandson.
A Celebration of Life
Judy’s remarkable life was a testament to her courage, curiosity, and compassion. The profound impact she had on her community will continue to inspire those who knew her. A celebration of her life is scheduled for November 2, a gathering to honor her legacy and the memories she created with friends and family.
As the community mourns her loss, Judith Ernst will be remembered not only for her contributions to education but also for the love and joy she brought to the lives of those around her. Her legacy will undoubtedly continue to guide and inspire future generations.
