Community Mourns the Loss of Educator Kathleen Ann Giacalone

Kathleen Ann Giacalone, a beloved educator and community member, passed away peacefully on November 16, 2025, at the age of 88. Her family announced her passing, noting that she left behind a legacy of dedication to education and a passion for travel.

Born on April 24, 1937, in San Pedro, Kathleen was the daughter of Vincent and Antoinette Vitalich. She later moved to Lomita, where she spent her life with her husband, Rosario (Jack) Giacalone. Kathleen devoted nearly four decades to teaching elementary school students, impacting countless lives during her 39-year career.

In her retirement, Kathleen developed a keen interest in traveling, exploring new places and cultures. Her adventurous spirit was an inspiration to her family and friends, and she cherished the memories created during her journeys.

Kathleen is survived by her husband, Jack; her daughter, ToniLynn (Tomo) Meek; her son, Paul (Kelly) Giacalone; and her four grandchildren, Tommy, Anthony, Jacquelyn, and Gianna. She also leaves behind many nieces and nephews who will remember her fondly.

In honor of her commitment to helping others, the family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made in Kathleen’s name to several charitable organizations, including Shriners Children’s, St. Jude’s Research Hospital, Disabled American Veterans, and the San Pedro Peninsula Cancer Guild. These organizations reflect her caring nature and her desire to support those in need.

A Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, December 2, 2025, at 10:30 a.m. at Mary Star of the Sea Church, where friends and family will gather to celebrate her life and legacy.

As the community comes together to mourn Kathleen Ann Giacalone, her contributions to education and her spirit of generosity will be remembered by all who knew her.
