In a spirited contest on January 6, 2023, Aaliyah Mack showcased her talent as Fairmont Prep’s girls basketball team faced off against the formidable Archbishop Mitty during the Kay Yow Showcase at Rosary in Fullerton. Despite the team’s loss, Mack’s performance was a bright spot in the 80-45 defeat against the nationally ranked Monarchs.
The 6-foot-3 freshman center went head-to-head with McKenna Woliczko, a senior bound for the University of Iowa. Woliczko, who has been recovering from a knee injury, is currently rated as the sixth-best senior player in the nation by ESPN. Mack held her own, contributing 11 points, a team-high eight rebounds, and two blocks, including one against Woliczko early in the game.
Strong Start and Challenges
Fairmont Prep started the game with the first five points, but Archbishop Mitty quickly responded with a 17-0 run, establishing dominance early. Mack managed to halt the run with a basket, but the Monarchs ended the first quarter with a commanding 26-9 lead, having made five three-pointers.
The second quarter saw Archbishop Mitty extend their lead to 46-16 by halftime, demonstrating their prowess as the third-ranked team in the nation according to MaxPreps. The Monarchs, with a record of 12-1, prepared for a showdown against the top-ranked Ontario Christian the following day.
Despite the loss, Fairmont Prep is no stranger to tough competition. Ranked No. 2 in Orange County, the Huskies have faced top teams, including Ontario Christian and participated in elite tournaments like the Nike Tournament of Champions.
Mack’s Rising Confidence
Fairmont Prep head coach Josh Lozano praised Mack’s determination and skill. “She’s up for the battle,” he said, noting her experience competing against some of the best players in the country. Mack herself expressed confidence despite knowing Woliczko’s reputation. “I knew she was good but I wasn’t really intimidated,” she stated. “I think I have my days. Today it really showed. I am confident.”
In addition to Mack’s contributions, Lesina Afu led Fairmont Prep with 16 points, bolstered by two three-pointers, while Adyra Rajan and Sarah Aldeguer, committed to Harvard and Princeton respectively, each added nine points. The Huskies played without Mathis Dritz, a Columbia commit, who was sidelined due to an ankle injury.
Looking ahead, Mack acknowledged the need for her team to come together. “Right now, we’re working on playing together and really using our pieces,” she said. Her ongoing adjustment to high school competition reflects her commitment to growth.
On the opposing side, Woliczko finished with 14 points, demonstrating her impact with nine of those points scored in a strong third quarter. Teammate Ze’ni Patterson also contributed 14 points, and Archbishop Mitty’s bench outscored Fairmont Prep’s reserves 29-0.
As the Kay Yow Showcase continues, the performances of players like Aaliyah Mack highlight the competitive spirit and talent present in high school basketball. The matchup against Archbishop Mitty serves as a learning experience for Fairmont Prep as they prepare for upcoming challenges.
